Chattisgarh

Chattisgarh has a long history of voluntary work; however, there is no network that deals with civil society issues in general. VANI is initiating the formation of a broad-based network in the state by identifying common social issues in the sector. The strategy is to start with an informal network and explore the possibility of taking it forward. Aside from voluntary organisations, academia and the media are also involved in the process of forming the network.

Update

VANI carried out a short study to assess the feasibility of a broad based network for the state. Previous activities have been done in this regard. A zonal meeting was organised on 7 March 2006 in Bilaspur. Forty delegates including voluntary organisations, media and academics participated in the meeting and decided to:

• Establish  steering committee at different zones;

• Sensitize the media on  the activities of voluntary organizations

• Establish a broad based network at state level to facilitate the communication with zonal steering committees.

Issues

FCMC Bill-2005    

VANI is creating awareness amongst NGOs about the bill in the state. VANI has formed 6 zones in Chattisgarh to tackle the issue.

Right to Information Act

Aside from sensitising voluntary organisations about the Act, VANI is gathering case studies and success stories about citizens who have used the law to assert their right to information.

News:

VANI organised a meeting on 7^th March 06 in Bilaspur, a zone comprised of voluntary organisations, academics, media persons from Kawardhs, Korba and Bilaspur. In this meeting, a discussion will be held on FCMC and another topic is role of civil society. A meeting on similar issues will also be organised in Sarguja and Rajnandgaon zones whose dates are yet to be finalise.
